I absolutely love this book!

I absolutely love this book! I plan on giving it to my daughter and I know she will love it. Its about doing good deeds and getting jelly beans! There is a great message too. Beautifully illustrated and thoughtfully penned, “Jillee Bean and the One Good Thing” is the endearing story of a Dad that teaches his daughter all about serving others by doing one “good thing” at a time. This book isn’t just a great bed-time read, it shows kids (and adults) that we don’t have to be the smartest, fastest, or best at huge things- it’s the small ways we serve and are kind that make a big difference over time.Love the brilliant & engaging illustrations and the adventures of Jillee Bean as she sets off to fill her jelly bean jar with good deeds. A MUST for your family’s book collection! I am true believer in good energy, and that the more you do for others, the more it comes back to you. I’m not sure if your school has a program where your kid donates a book on their birthday to the library, but this would be a really great choice!

A wonderful message on the importance of kindness

I am a HUGE supporter of Random Acts of Kindness (RAKs) and love how this book relates the importance of helping others over winning trophies and medals. It starts off though with the young girl, Jillee, telling her father what a horrible day she was having. Instead of telling her to ‘get over it’ or ‘life is tough’ he took it as a positive teaching moment that Jillee could help others and achieve her goals as well. For every one good thing she did, her father would give her a jelly bean to put in a jar. Once the jar is full, she can eat the jelly beans. This book shows all the different and small ways you could be kind to one another. Things that you never would think of could make a big difference in someone’s life. My favorite good deed though was Jillee walking the pack of dogs that turned into a frantic jog (been there, so I can relate). I plan on reading this book to my young niece because it’s never too early to start being kind. I also like how at the beginning of the book there is an ‘award’ page for the recipient where you put their name and the date that they achieved a full jar of jelly beans. The illustrations are beautifully done and wonderfully colorful. It also helps that my niece has blonde hair so I can change the name of the little girl in the story to my niece’s name. The book is larger than I thought it would be in size, but the pages, even though they are paper and not cardboard, are incredibly thick so it would be difficult for a child to accidently rip these pages. Great book, with colorful illustrations, and a wonderfully important message.

Beautiful life lessons and illustrations for boys and girls

In this world of constant competition everywhere we turn : School, Sports, Television reality shows, computer games, movies.... (you get my drift) This book is a breath of fresh air ! There are so many important life lessons touched on in the story of Jillee Bean it is quite surprising that they were able to squeeze them all into a 22 page children's book that has only a few sentences on each beautifully illustrated page. But they have done it, and done it quite well.
Without rewriting the entire story I will share the lessons that my children have gleaned from reading this book.
The first thing I love is that the young girl goes to her father to talk about how she is feeling instead of the more common daughter confiding in her mother. She doesn't feel that she is good at anything, and that she isn't as good as her friends are at some things. Her father has a very encouraging idea to help her see that she is very good at doing many things. The story goes on to tell how she discovers that she is indeed good at many things. There are many other life lessons "hidden" in her good things that are not the focus, but underlying messages about how helping people and being generous are also very important things.
My children may love the book for the beautiful and colorful illustrations but I love it for all of the positive messages. Both my 8 year old daughter and my 5 year old son love reading it equally. I will be adding this to my list of wonderful gifts to give children for birthdays or Christmas for sure.
