The story of an original

I gather this biography should be most interesting to those intrigued by Phase Space Quantum Mechanics, and are curious about the people who discovered this astounding formulation in the 1940s: Joe Moyal was one of the two principal characters, Hip Groenewold being the other. Moyal's widow briskly writes his absorbing story here, with unique glimpses into the book's subject, and an adroit, instinctive avoidance of the inessential---the author has a lifelong distinguished professional expertise in the history of science.
The phase-space formulation merges more directly with the classical theory, since it works with the same variables as the classical theory, with essentially the same interpretation, and thus avoids the standard, counter-intuitive switch to operators underpining the Hilbert-space formulation of Quantum Mechanics, which has befuddled countless students at first.
Moyal's exceptionally adventurous life and career are on offer, with plenty of sociocultural titbits. The focus is on his highly original mind, intrepid spirit, wit and exuberance in living, as well as his inventions, in engineering, applied physics, theoretical physics, and statistics.
