Forces imposed by the twentieth century--modernization, globalization, the politics and economics of nation--have become so great that major changes in the old ways have had to take place for the sake of survival. The arid regions impose strict limits upon human existence and activity. And yet by respecting those limits, the flourishing and stable culture of these regions has for centuries been sustained. In the last thirty years, however, the forces imposed by the twentieth century--modernization, globalization, the politics and economics of nation--have become so great that major changes in the old ways have had to take place for the sake of survival.
Egypt's northwest coast, where meager coastal rains have supported a sparse but thriving population of Bedouin, has recently seen the arrival of settlers from the Nile Valley, accustomed to a very different way of life and production, and hordes of tourists whose "empty, silent structures" have effectively turned the most productive strip of the coastal range into an artificial desert. This study documents the great accommodations that have taken place to ensure the arid rangelands of the northwest coast continue to be viable for the demands of human existence imposed on them.
"A main thesis of this study," the authors write, "is that change in the northwest coast of Egypt has strong parallels in other arid regions of the wider Arab world; and specific comparisons are made to change underway elsewhere--especially regarding the transformation of Arab nomadic pastoralist production to a new form of ranching, and the related changes of sedentarization and the monetization of most aspects of livelihood."

Balanced Perspective on Arab Life
By Charlotte A. Hu
I studied under Dr. Soraya Altorki in Egypt and what struck me most about the first woman from Saudi Arabia to receive a PhD and her's from a Western university -- Harvard was that she seemed open to all ideas and balanced in her critique of Western and Arab cultures, of gender distinctions and of social classes. This all seemed in contrast to the rumors that she hailed from a wealthy, upperclass family and that she was a "feminist." This feminist label placed on her seemed odd to me as during one lecture, she explained that any, ANY definition of either gender automatically cages the opposite gender, limiting the potential of the individual who happens to be that gender. She used emotion and tenderness as an example, explaining that if we define this as the exclusive right of women, we push social pressure against a man's right to enjoy the simple pleasures of watching his child's first steps or throwing a ball to his son in a park.
She demonstrates her open analysis of how our social pressures develop us in this description of how the geographical and weather elements of desert life interact with and generate many of the social rules of life for the Bedouin culture. She's a fascinating and delightful lecturer, author and person.
Unlike Edward Said, she doesn't seem to be an Arab apologist. Rather than apologize for the elements of Arab and desert culture, she simply explores how and why decisions might be rational decisions. Once, during class, she asked us, is it really necessary that marriage be as it is in the Western context that a man serve all social, emotional and spiritual needs to his wife? Or could that extreme pressure be the cause for many divorces and might it be a healthier relationship to divide the burden of so many diverse needs of the individual to other family members, like sisters, aunts and cousins?
As with this book, she never definitively declared that one answer was necessarily valid. She simply proposed that a broader range of possible options might be worth consideration as we mold and shape our lives. Above all else, she urged us to consider the unwritten, often unspoken rules of our lives that we had always considered universal -- to re-examine what might have been urban myths and debunk them until we can see clearly what we do and why we do it.
This case study takes a closer look at why a rather alien culture does what they do, but she uses such studies to help her studies reflect on our own lives and on the limitations we place on our lives and look for a new inner freedom of thought.

Interesting case study
By Seth J. Frantzman
This study examines the exploitation and development of the western desert area of Egypt, concentrating on the town of Marsa Mutrah, whose population has exploded in the last fifty years, and thecoastal zone between Alexandria and Libya. One hundred years ago few settled people lived here. In the 19th century small numbers of Greeks, Armenians and others immigrated from Alexandria and then later larger numbers of Nile Valley peasents arrived. Meanwhile the bedouin tribes in the region became increasingly sedenterized.
This book explores the interplay betweent the government and the bedouin and development. THere are studies of sedenterization and land issue struggles. The last section examined the role of mostly Egyptian tourists and exclusion of bedouin from many industries.
The tragic part of this study is that for some reason the conclusion includes a diatribe against the 'west' and Israel. It blames Israel and the west for the problems of the region. It claims the west and the Second World War brought ideas of 'modernity' to the area and thus destruction and globalization. But the study didnt mention this and it seems merely a political jab. The implication that Israel somehow affected the western bedouin because Egypt was 'forced' to build military bases on nomad's lands is completely far fetched.
