In this autobiography, Norris and Abraham catalogue in a mostly chronological fashion the major events of Norris's Horatio Alger–like life. After a tumultuous and impoverished childhood marred by an alcoholic father, Norris turned his life around by joining the military and learning a martial art, tang soo do, while stationed in Korea. Having achieved a black belt, he returned to the United States and built a career as a karate instructor, winning six world championships. Norris counted many celebrities among his students, including Steve McQueen, who, along with Bruce Lee, encouraged Norris to pursue a film and television career. Even though Norris and Abraham employ a bland style of reportage, often bereft of smooth transitions and replete with empty phrases such as "I've always had a special place in my heart for children," the facts of Norris's life make this book compelling. Not only has he succeeded in martial arts and acting, but he has a long, eclectic list of additional achievements and experiences, such as breaking a world record in boat racing and being a close friend of the Bush family. While this book is being promoted as a Christian autobiography, Norris did not fully embrace a Christian lifestyle until the mid-1990s. Despite its limited spiritual content, this memoir will please those who admire Norris's achievements and conservative activism.

About the Author

Chuck Norris is a legendary film and televison actor best known for his popular series Walker, Texas Ranger, now in sydication to millions worldwide. He is also a martial arts expert, an active humanitarian and founder of KICKSTART, and author of the New York Times best-selling autobiography Against All Odds. Norris also writes a column that appears in Human Events, Town Hall, and World Net Daily, among other outlets. He lives with his wife Gena and their children near Houston, Texas.

Chuck Norris - a man to emulate!

This is the story of Chuck Norris. I really enjoyed it and wish everyone would read it. Many know that Chuck was a 6 time undefeated professional world champion of Karate. Many have seem the movies he has made. Most people have seen his TV series, "Walker, Texas Ranger." But other than that we know little of who he really is. Chuck Norris is one of the more down to earth Hollywood types who has had his share of ups and downs.

His story chronicles his life and shows how he dealt with the things that have faced him and his family. Like all of us, he has failed at times. Like all of us, he wishes that he had done somethings differently.

Chucks faith in Christ is evident throughout the book. Yet he doesn't hammer us with it. Many of the projects that were started through Chuck's desire to help people are a direct result of his faith in Christ.

"Against All Odds: My Story," by Chuck Norris is a very engaging book that you will enjoy and find hard to put it down.

BEST books ever!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE all of her books! I can't say enough about them except I think these books should be mandatory for all teachers! I love how simple the books are to read and she always gives good advice at the end on how to incorporate the coping mechanisms. I am an Occupational Therapist, single mother of 2 girls ages 8 and 10, and a Girl Scout leader to two troops. Julia Cook's book have helped me explain to my "kids" emotional and physical "conditions" in a non-judgmental and inspiring way. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL OF HER BOOKS!!!!! I also recommend you get her accompanying workbook for teachers which she has produced for several of her products. Our favorite books from Julia Cook: My Mouth is Like a Volcano (I only have to say "volcano" to my "kids" and they know they need to wait before interrupting my conversation; it's great having a "code" word so as not to "embarrass" the kids in front of others); It Isn't Easy Being a Verb (my youngest has ADHD - great resource for her); Melvin the Molar (the importance of good oral hygiene); Decibela (inside vs outside voice). I also highly recommend the book Making Friends is an Art, which was co-authored with another person (I believe). All the teachers, and pediatric OT's, I have shared these books with have gone out and immediately purchased and have used with good success. If I could give Julia Cook's books a 10/5 rating, I would. You will NOT be disappointed!!!!

I really love this book! It was exactly what I looking for for my 6th grader who thinks everything is someone else's fault. It was an easy read, but not to babyish for a 12 yr old boy yo understand the point. Great, fun read!

ANOTHER FANTASTIC BOOK BY JULIA COOK!

How many times do parents and teachers hear this little phrase, “But it’s not my fault!” Once again in her accomplished way, Ms. Cook addresses solution for a common childhood problem of not wanting to take responsibility for their actions.
Noodle is at it again, being a kid and having trouble blaming everyone else for his mistakes. No matter if his blunders or large or small, they are all someone else’s fault, to the point of being ridiculous! My favorite was when he was called down for interrupting and he said, “But it’s not my fault! My mouth is addicted to talking!” The blame game may seem innocent in a child but if not corrected they grow to be adults who live their lives as victims and are never responsible for any mistakes.
Ms. Cook’s words of insight and wisdom come through Noodle’s Mom. I like the way the story hits at the heart of the problems without having an accusatory tone. This way the children have the opportunity to look at themselves without feeling the need to defend, or blame!! Another favorite point made in the book is “Blaming others is a reason but it’s not an excuse.”
I had my 10 year old granddaughter and 13 year old grandson read the book. When they finished each one had a sheepish look and said, “I do this. . . sometimes”. Both said it helped them see they need to own up for what they do. Also that it affects those around them. Someone could get in trouble for what they falsely accused them of. Plus blame causes conflict and hard feelings among friends and family. At the end are very helpful ideas to guide children in overcoming this bad habit. Engaging vibrant illustrations, sound wisdom, and written from a child’s viewpoint. A great to help children (and it wouldn’t hurt adults to read it either!) Interest in wine shows no signs of diminishing, and wine encyclopedias appear to be keeping pace. This latest, edited by a wine expert of almost two decades, focuses on European-primarily French-viticulture, with overviews of the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, and "the rest of the world." Each zone includes a discussion of its major wine producers, a map, photographs, and unique minutiae. Just as useful is the emphasis on self-education: reading labels; decanting, tasting, selecting, keeping, and serving wine; evaluating corkscrews and glasses; and forming wine and food partnerships. The section on wine-making is fascinating, and readers should find the page on ordering in restaurants very helpful. At the end, there are charts of vintages and of criteria and regulations for quality wine status. The seven pages of wine production statistics seem a bit removed from the book's more sensual purpose, and the glossary favors European spelling, e.g. "oenology." A very good academic style book on wines.

This is a very good book that is quite well known among wine lovers for years now. However, I find the information too academic and clinical for today's tastes. I will use this as a coffee table book and will probably mostly look at videos online. Or this could be a great book to have in your countryside cabin where the internet is rare or scarce. It is well titled - it is an encyclopedia and it does cover the basics of various varietals and regions.

The book is simply amazing and covers all the wine-producing regions of the world. I bought this book to my husband as a gift and he really likes it for it is being so complete about wine. I think this book is useful for both connaisseurs and those who try to become a connaisseur. I recommend this book to everyone interested in wine.

The book contains detailed information about production, bottles, regions, basically everything that is worth to know about wine.

A wine Encyclopdeia For Everyone.

This wine encyclopedia has all the information that you will need about wine. It is useful for anyone, from the novice to the connoisseur. I agree with my fellow reviewer that France gets the lion's share of the attention, though I did find the section on Italian wines to be quite good. What was particularly useful was detailed information about the various wine producing regions, the major vinyards, and how to read labels, which at times can be confusing. All of this gives the reader enough information to make really good choices. What was a welcome surprise was the section on the Czeck Republic and Slovenia, and the quality wines that they produce. The section on the United States could have been longer, and I expect that to be expaned in updated editions. Overall, an excellent book on wine.

About the Author
HG Wells was born in Bromley, Kent in 1866. After working as a draper's apprentice and pupil-teacher, he won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in 1884, studying under T H Huxley. He was awarded a first-class honours degree in biology and resumed teaching but had to retire after a kick from an ill-natured pupil afflicted his kidneys. He worked in poverty in London as a crammer while experimenting in journalism and stories. It was with The Time Machine (1895) that he had his real breakthrough.

This is an older compilation of HG Wells' short stories. Though the stories are old, the writing is fantastic and the ideas ahead of their time. Some stories are sci-fi, some fantasy, some nostalgic, many are like episodes of the Twilight Zone, and most have some moral or message to them. I highly recommend this book.

Most people know H.G. Wells as the author of classic Sci-fi stories like "War of the Worlds" and "The Invisible Man." In addition to his many classic works, Wells was a prolific author of short stories. While some of them are unexciting, many of them are simply genius. He mixes adventure, humor, and sci-fi in these unusual and odd-ball stories. Any fan of unique short stories will enjoy this collection.

H.G. Wells as you've never known him

First off, this collection does not contain The Time Machine, I'm not sure what collection the other reviewer was referring to. However, this collection does contain some of the best stories you will ever read.

I discovered H.G. Wells relatively late in life (within this past year, at the age of 33) when I stumbled on a discount copy of "The Island of Dr. Moreau." Like most people, I'd read "War of the Worlds" in high school and thought it pretty good. However, I believe to truly appreciate Wells one must be older. Old enough to have experienced some sort of life and to appreciate fine, clean writing.

After reading "The Island of Dr. Moreau" I was surprised at how current the story felt and how horrific some of the details were (it definitely didn't read or feel like a book written over 100 years ago). As a result, each time I stopped at a used book store I'd peruse the shelves looking for anything Wells. I stumbled on a collection of five of his short stories called "The Empire of the Ants." What? Wells wrote short stories? No way! I bought the book and read it over my vacation. I was amazed. Wells is known for writing in detail, but I'd say his writing is even more detailed in his short stories (possibly because in a short story you don't have to worry about bogging the reader down in too much detail- causing them to lose the thread of the story).

What Wells does, and what he's famous for, is writing in such detail that a scenario becomes supremely believable, then, he adds a touch of the fantastic to really knock the reader's socks off. Since he's already created this ultra-realistic world, the fantastic becomes believable and the reader is left thinking, "that could really happen, couldn't it?"

After reading that collection of shorts, I looked for something more comprehensive and found "The Complete Short Stories of H.G. Wells" edited by John Hammond. I was amazed again! The breadth and scope of Wells' stories is amazing: from a rogue plant with a taste for human blood, to a voodoo shaman out for revenge, to an upstart student with a conscious, Wells' imagination knows no bounds.

I'm about half way through the book and my favorite stories thus far are "The Flowering of the Strange Orchid," "Pollock and the Porroh Man" and "In the Modern Vein: An Unsympathetic Love Story" (the stories I decribed above) also "The Lord of the Dynamos," "The Sea Raiders" and "A Story of the Stone Age." I must also add that I read "The Country of the Blind" as part of the previous book containing Wells' stories and it too is amazing. Also, I admit that sometimes Wells delves into too much detail, which can frustrate the reader and slow the story down. However, of the 30-40 stories I've read thus far, it has only happened a handful of times.

I only wish that this collection contained a short critique before each story. Mr. Hammond is a renowned Wells scholar and has even written a book analyzing Wells' short stories (a book I can't locate, by the way), that book I believe is essential to really understanding these stories (namely due to Wells' tendency to critique society in his writing). Unfortunately, no real analysis is available in this compilation, thus, the reader is left to his own interpretation. For the most part, the stories are pretty self-explanatory, but it would be nice to understand some of the other meanings.

In conclusion, I give this collection 5 stars and I highly recommend it for anyone with a taste for great storytelling. Wells' writing is fantastic, touching, humorous, detailed and very sensitive- I think you'll be surprised at how he'll win you over. H.G. Wells is a master writer, and he's gained me as a fan for life! :)

An extraordinary book!

I recently added this book to my cookbook collection, which numbers more than 1,000 volumes (probably more like 1200 but I'm still cataloging). It has immediately become one of my favorites (and definitely my #1 favorite in English). If you are a serious cook, love to read cookbooks like novels, and view recipes as suggestions rather than as requiring strict adherence to precise measurements, then this is the book for you! (Did I say I LOVE this book?)

I make all of the desserts for my husband's restaurant. If I snag some particularly luscious fruit and want to make it into a dessert, this is the book I reach for first. I don't WANT to be told how to make a fruit sorbet. I already know how. But I love having a list of suggested flavors and products that go with what I already have. It's like having an uber-creative friend at your side saying "hey, why not try THIS?"

And if you are not an experienced cook, this book provides invaluable guidance that a recipe book never could. It is wholly different from every food book I have ever read.

The book is clever, useful, and obviously the product of prodigious research. To the authors, I send my humble gratitude. You have made my life immeasurably easier, and my dishes far more interesting than ever before.

This book is a must-read if you love to eat or love to cook. I have already bought six copies and have given two as gifts. It's THAT good.

I love this book, even though its not really a book!

It's more of a compendium of alphabetical listings of foods that are paired together. The format basically goes something like this:

Blueberries
Season: spring-summer
Taste: sour-sweet
Botanical relatives: huckleberries
Weight: light
Volume: quiet-moderate
Techniques: cooked, raw
Tips: Can subtitute huckleberries

allspice
almonds
apricots
bananas
blackberries
butter, unsalted
buttermilk
chocolate, white
CINNAMON
cinnamon basil
cloves...

It is like a book that is a giant index, which refers you to things that can pair well. This book is more for people who have a willingness to experiment. It gives pointers on what other people think might go good with an item, such as blueberries. You have to figure out your own proportions. Of course, responsible cooks probably want to taste the food they serve beforehand anyways. ;)

Flavor, because you can't live on Bread and Water alone

Flavor is the basis for all food, without it, the world would seem less colorful, lifeless, and bland. Food isn't just about what you can taste in your mouth but also what you can see with your eyes, what you smell with your nose and what you feel in your heart. That's what is presented in this book. (The authors wrote two other acclaimed books, Culinary Artistry and What to Drink with What You Eat.)

Culinary Artistry showcased was that food can be art. That colors structure on a plate can evoke emotions the same as any other art work. And like any art work, is in the eye of the beholder.

What to Drink with What You Eat gave us the understanding that beverages (not just wine) can be paired and should be thought of as a condiment rather than an afterthought

The Flavor Bible talks about, well, flavor; but more then that, it talks about what flavor is and how we perceive it, receive it, balance it and emphasize it. All coming to the climax which is a very in depth list (3/4ths of the book) of ingredients detailing its profile (weak, strong), seasonality, and every herb, spice, fruit, vegetable, meat, fish, poultry and alcoholic related item and what would go exceptionally well with it.

So, if it is so good, why did I give it only 4 stars? The list for the most part is just an update from Culinary Artistry; most flavor companions haven't change since the days of Escoffier. The "new" list does give mention of the seasonality of produce and also the break down of different cuts of meat such as beef, lamb, pork, and poultry into their respected parts and given their own listings.

Culinary Artistry was my best friend going through culinary school and now I have a great addition that I am sure I'll end up burning through as well. I look to this book every time I cook to add that extra something to a dish. So if you are even the slightest bit interested in cooking or making good food taste even better then you can't go wrong buying this book.

Good, if you want to design a SPICE simulator

Eh, it's a decent-enough book. The author is obviously well-versed. But, there's a lot of background theorems and proofs that make this feel more like a math-text than a "tweak this to get this" solution for SPICE modeling. I thought Chap7 (noise) plus Appendix-A and Appendix-B were solid, the rest would be useful if you plan to design your own SPICE-sim, not use something already out there.

A helpful book to understand semiconductor model

Spice is a software package that become a de facto standar in circuit simulation. But as in any other circuit simulator we need to define the accurate input model to get the accurate results. And this book describe in more detail the components that is used in almost any electronic circuit, i.e. semiconductor devices. The value that is a credit point for this book is not just how detail the description of the semiconductor model is in order to get the accurate parameters but also how to use those parameters in Spice. So, for you who new to this circuit simulator there is no need to worry because this book explain how the circuit model is built using Spice. And for you who need the basic theory of semiconductor model the book gives two nice appendices on that one. One chapter that is need to be explored in more detail is about noise and distortion (hopefully in the next edition the editor could have more on that topic). Finally, this is a "must be read" book for you who want to get excellent results in modelling electronic circuit.

Namun secara umum berlaku pula bahwa untuk menghasilkan simulasi rangkaian elektronik secara akurat dibutuhkan parameter-parameter yang akurat pula untuk setiap modelnya. Buku ini memberikan ulasan mendalam tentang parameter-parameter bagi pemodelan device semikonduktor. Kelebihan yang dimiliki buku ini tidak hanya pada bagaimana penghitungan dan pengukuran parameter untuk model tersebut tetapi bagaimana menggunakannya pada simulasi rangkaian menggunakan SPICE. Bagi Anda yang baru mendalami spice jangan khawatir karena buku ini juga memberikan ulasan tentang sistem pemodelan dalam spice. Sebaliknya bagi anda yang baru dalam pemodelan semikonduktor buku ini juga memberikan apendiks tentang teori dasar semikonduktor. Satu hal yang mungkin perlu dibahas lebih mendalam adalah tentang Nose dan Distorsi (mudah-mudahan dalam edisi berikutnya materi ini dapat lebih dikembangkan). Kesimpulannya, buku ini merupakan suatu buku yang wajib dibaca bila anda ingin lebih akurat dalam menjalankan simulasi rangkaian elektronik yang menggunakan semikonduktor.
