Shirley A. Fedorak has taught at the University of Saskatchewan and the Cairo American College. She is the author of Pop Culture: The Culture of Everyday Life (2009), Anthropology Matters, (2007 and 2012), and was the lead author from 2002-2008 for the Canadian edition of William Haviland's bestselling introductory text Cultural Anthropology.

Plagued by underdeveloped arguments and shoddy research

This book is interesting in some places, but only as a jumping off point for further research. It presents a very one sided narrative, and often glosses over or fails to mention research that contradicts its assertions. It adequately explains most issues it touches on, but tends to oversimplify the causes, failing to provide sufficient proof to back up the assertions that it treats as fact. The author, a Canadian, humorously spends much of the book accusing her fellow Westerners of being Eurocentric, and failing to elevate the voices of those in non-Western nations. An admittedly valid point which she proves with her heavy reliance on the research of Western anthropologists and social scientists for her main points.

The text is sprinkled with references to the work of others, but if you go and actually read the research being cited, you notice that the conclusions being drawn by Fedorak are not necessarily supported there.

The book comes very close to being insightful on several occasions, but is ultimately bogged down by its own underdeveloped and contradictory arguments.

Clean eats but so time-consuming!

Let me start by saying I respect Brendan Brazier. I have followed him and his progresses and discoveries on clean vegan nutrition for years. I am a firm believer that we need to clean up our diets and that natural sourced foods are the way to go for a better health, disease prevention, and for... thriving!
However, as good as his recipes look or sound like, they also are time-, energy-, and money-consuming. The ingredients for the recipes are often exotic and hard to find at your local grocery store (even at a co-op or natural store). You will have to go through three markets (including probably an Asian one) to find all for the coconut lime lemongrass soup as tempting as it is! Also for the spice mixes, you will have to find powdered reiki, or echinea and astralagus.
At last, his desserts and drinks recipes sound oh! so yummy, but come on! ...I need a high speed blender, slow-speed juice extractor, and high-speed juicer! I can't even start to think about making a green juice following his mighty king chlorophyll juice!
To sum up, I would say it's a great book with amazing, tasty, healthy recipes for people who have a lot of time and quite some money on hand and live in big cities where health stores flourish.

I wanted to like this more.

I really wanted to love this book. I am still not completely vegan but I don't eat dairy or land animals at all and have been transitioning for the last few months to a whole foods diet and thought this book could be a good fit.

He means transitioning if you are still used to eating burgers and want fake meat and cheese! There are so many burger recipes in this that use the same aioli and the same sprouted buns over and over again. Plus wraps. I think he just made the sauces so complicated to justify a wrap recipe. One burger recipe consists of 5 different recipes. Same goes for desserts. Incredibly long ingredient lists--one cheesecake recipe says prep time is only 20 minutes. It took me 20 minutes just to read the recipe!

I love to cook and probably spend 2 hours a day cooking and some of these recipes are so ridiculously complicated in their ingredients, preparation, and time that I don't even want to tackle them. Also, I was surprisingly turned off by all the photos of him running and bicycling. He comes across as a total ego-maniac. (It's as bad as the mommy bloggers that get cookbook deals and then put a zillion photos of their children in their cookbooks.)

In short:
If you want an adventure and have a high-speed blender, this is the book for you.

If you have a busy life and not a lot of time or have apprehension in the kitchen, probably not a good book for you.

I love Brendan's earlier books such as Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide to Optimal Performance. That book has great information and useful recipes. He went Hollywood in this book. Most of these recipes call for his 'products' as an ingredient. It's more gloss than it is substance.

About the Author
Currently in his fifteenth year on the faculty of the University of Texas, Professor Bredeson specializes in business ethics, business law, and discrimination law and has received several rare teaching awards including the Lockheed Martin Excellence Award for three years running. He is also among the youngest recipients of the Board of Regents Teaching Award and was UT's nominee for the Carnegie Foundation's United States Professor of the Year Award in 2010. Professor Bredeson recently published the STUDENT GUIDE TO THE SARBANES-OXLEY ACT with Robert Prentice and is the co-author of BUSINESS LAW AND THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT with Jeffrey Beatty and Susan Samuelson. He earned his undergraduate degree from the McCombs School of Business and J.D. from the School of Law at the University of Texas.

What's ethical about this price?

My joke about this book is there is nothing ethical about this textbook, since it is so expensive, and it is price controlled across the web. This is why some young people copy, share and distribute copyrighted material. When they are already broke from college and have the very start of a career, and are then required by an instructor to buy such an expensive book, that they will never read again, of course some find ways to share this type of material. There are similar books on ethics that cost $8 to buy and keep. This sucker was outrageously priced, I think between $200 and $300 to buy as a textbook! Even as a temporary kindle book it was expensive! In my opinion a "temporary" anything should be super-cheap or free like a library copy. The worst part is the hypocrisy of this being a book on business ethics. I guess it's an example of unethical price control of a market and gouging the customer.

Absolutely terrible textbook. The examples are awful

Absolutely terrible textbook. The examples are awful, with sometimes inappropriate details that render no use when it comes to answering the subsequent questions (i.e.: strip club jokes and examples involving pornography). Beyond that, there's no meat to the book at all. Concepts are vaguely introduced, no more than a page to two pages, and then an example is used to illustrate the point. While this could be done well, this book does it very poorly, with the one to two pages often containing useless details about the author. Complete waste of money, as I did not learn a single thing from the book. I only learned from Googling the Module's topic. I can't believe I had to pay to suffer through a semester of reading this.

Glad that I bought it, although I'm interested in only a few of the arrangements.

A fair number of the songs in the book are not pieces that I want to play, really, but
they are well-known Christmas songs, so I can't criticize the book on that account.
I bought the book for the few songs that I do want to play, such as "I'll Be Home for
Christmas." I just played the arrangement of "Blue Christmas." (It's not easy to find
a good arrangement of that song, and I made some note changes
and timing changes to the arrangement in this book, just to play it the way I like it.)
The arrangements have the notes and tablature, and if you can read music, you can make tablature
arrangements better, by playing some of the notes at different places on the guitar. To learn
the notes on the guitar, I can recommend "Philip's Learn All the Notes on the Guitar Flash Cards."

Fun-to-play, instructional and good sounding arrangements of Christmas classics. I've owned this since before last Christmas and just took it out again to begin some holiday music making. Intermediate arrangements for the fingerstyle player.

Good arrangements of Christmas songs ... not carols!

This is a very nice collection of non-religious Christmas music. I would rate the arrangements as appropriate for the advanced-beginner to intermediate. For an advanced player, the arrangements are accessible for sight-reading. For those who aren't great sight-readers, the songs will come along quickly with a little practice; you probably hear the tunes every year in the run up to Christmas, so they're already familiar.

This is NOT a collection of CAROLS. To the critical reviewer says that the book is "bereft of any reference to Christ": there are lots of other good books for CAROLS. The best is Stephen Siktberg's "Christmas Music for Acoustic Guitar."

I was very happy to find this book and to add the arrangements of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," "Rudolph," "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year," "Frosty the Snowman," "My Favorite Things" and "Feliz Navidad" to my Christmas music folio!

Example or really good book on advance printing

I am quite new to Black and White printing (that is I do my own printing but I am not professional). I am amazed by the wealth of information given in this book on toning, bleaching, multiple printing and so on. Furthermore you could really see what author mean by showing photographs before and after using some bleaching toning or other technics. And photographs by itself don't feel to be unnatural, in a sense, that most of them show some grain in much or less degree depending on used techinics. Of course, some photographers who like gradual soft sort of photography may not like Rudman's harsh contrasty style of depicting nature, but who cares, it's his artistic expression. He could really explain how he got one or another effect. By the way, if at the end you don't like this book you may leave it for the simple fact of its attractiveness. It could serve you as nice coffee table book, quality is superb. Excellent book.
