About the Author
Thomas Gilovich is Professor of Psychology and Co-Director of the Center for Behavioral Economics and Decision Research at Cornell University. He has taught social psychology for 33 years and is the recipient of the Russell Distinguished Teaching Award at Cornell. His research focuses on how people evaluate the evidence of their everyday experience to make judgments, form beliefs, and decide on courses of action. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the American Psychological Society, the American Psychological Association, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry.

Dacher Keltner is Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley. He has taught social psychology for the past 21 years and is the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award for Letters and Sciences. His research focuses on the prosocial emotions (such as love, sympathy, and gratitude), morality, and power. Other awards include the Western Psychological Association’s award for outstanding contribution to research, the Positive Psychology Prize for excellence in research, and the Distinguished Mentoring Award at UC Berkeley. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. In 2008, the Utne Reader listed Dacher as one of the 50 visionaries changing the world.

Serena Chen is Professor of Psychology and the Marian E. and Daniel E. Koshland, Jr. Distinguished Chair for Innovative Teaching and Research at the University of California, Berkeley. She has taught social psychology for the past 18 years and is the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award from Berkeley’s Social Science Division. Her research focuses on the impact of close relationships on the self and identity, and on the intrapersonal and interpersonal consequences of social power. She is a fellow of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology and is the recipient of the Early Career Award from the International Society for Self and Identity. The American Psychological Society also identified her as a Rising Star.

Richard E. Nisbett is Theodore M. Newcomb Distinguished University Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan and Research Professor at Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. He has taught courses in social psychology, cultural psychology, cognitive psychology, and evolutionary psychology. His research focuses on how people from different cultures think, perceive, feel, and act in different ways. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award of the American Psychological Association and the William James Fellow Award of the American Psychological Society and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dear god is this book dry. If you looking at this for an online course you might as well buy some booze to help get you through the chapters. The book is well put together with relevant information but its dry and an unpleasant read. Buy if you must, book was rented and came in new condition.

Good Explaination Of LINQ Technology

Compared to most .Net developers I am a relative novice. I don't develop in .Net full time. I'm a Java developer by day and do some consulting in .Net on nights and weekends. My experiences with .Net so far have been some basic ASP.Net web sites with SQL Server as the back end database. Most of my experience has been with Visual Studio 2008. I wanted to review this book to assist me in coming up to speed in LINQ and Visual Studio 2008. I started this will little or no exposure to LINQ. I just knew that it was a new programming tool from Microsoft to make accessing databases easier for the .Net developer. My goal from reading this book was to walk away with basic knowledge of using LINQ. Now having read the book and done the exercises that are included in it, I can say that I do have a basic understanding of how to use LINQ. I liked the fact that the author, Joe Mayo, chose to include exercises for the reader to do along with reading his book. I'm of the school that learns by doing, not by simply reading about new technologies, so this was very helpful for me in terms of understanding the concepts the author was discussing.

I got through all of the exercises except one that I had trouble with. I emailed the author about my troubles and he responded the same day and informed me that I needed to install Visual Studio 2008 service pack two to get the new functionality that I need for the exercise. I thought it was very nice of him to get back to me so quickly! I did have some trouble due to my lack of experience with some of the more advanced features of the C# programming language, (partial classes and partial methods, Lambda expressions etc). None of these issues were show stoppers in getting through the material in the book.

I was very impressed with the LINQ technology. You can just drag and drop a table from your database onto the page in Visual Studio and it builds a great deal of code for you. It builds the code that you will use to insert and update your data in that table. Very impressive! Microsoft has come a long way in terms of making a developer's job easier.

I had a really hard time with the syntax that LINQ uses. I'm an old Oracle developer and it took me a while to get used to this SQL server way of writing queries, but LINQ queries look entirely different than what I'm used to and it is not intuitive to me.

I'm used to:
SELECT first_name
FROM Users WHERE last_name = `Jones'

The same query in LINQ is something like:
FirstNames =
FROM names in Users
WHERE last_name = `Jones'
SELECT first_name

I'm having a really hard time with this new syntax but I will get used to it as I get more experience and it has nothing to do with the book or the author, it has to do with the technology of LINQ.

I thought the book was well written and well organized. It's obvious to me the Mr. Mayo has a great deal of knowledge and experience with LINQ and .Net development in general and it shows in his book. I think this is a good book for experienced .Net developers. I think I would have gotten more out of the book if I had a little more .Net programming experience. This is not a book for a beginner in .Net, Visual Studio 2008, or Database development. There are other beginner level books more specific to those topics where beginners should go.

LINQ Covered

This book covers just about anything you'd want to know about LINQ. The examples given are really useful. As a reader you have the option of just reading the first part of each chapter which covers a particular aspect of LINQ or diving in deep in by examining what happens at the CLR level (covered in the latter part of each chapter). LINQ to Objects, LINQ to XML and LINQ to SQL are all presented but the author goes further showing how to extend LINQ for your own custom needs. It is comprehensive enough to keep as a reference, so I got the Kindle version in order to keep it nearby at work.

Love Larry Beebe's arrangments

Creative, inspiring creations of well-loved hymns and Primary songs. I have several of his "'Hymns for Worship" Group singing books. The piano pieces in this book make beautiful preludes and even accompaniments for unison singing.
We hope to use it for our Primary Program this year if Mr. Beebe will allow some adaption. Waiting to hear on that. Meanwhile, I realize now I should have looked for the publisher's website before ordering the second book from Amazon. The books cost about half what they cost on Amazon directly from the publisher. I came upon this book after doing a web search for an arrangement of "Seek the Lord Early" that I heard about 5 years ago. It was just a guess that this might be it, and actually it wasn't. Very close, but without the beautiful key change I remembered. I have since learned the arrangement I've been looking for is in fact a Beebe arrangement in another of his books, "Hymn Rhapsodies". That one hasn't arrived, but I expect it any day. I'm glad I made the mistake though, because I'm in love with "I Stand All Amazed" and all the other pieces in this first book as well. He's a genius at melting the heart with his simple but rich chords, progressions, and interpretations.

At Stanford, she received the Award for Teaching Excellence three times. Well deserved place in educational philosophy

A must to those taking up educational theories class. Noddings is a master in this field and has drawn the breath and width to provide a basis in philosophical approach to education. She has a record in writing such critical thinking topics and debates justifying her place as a well known emeritus professor. I enjoy her consistencies in current issues that at times rebutt older philosophies of education putting us forward to current thinking.

About the Author

John Gardner began his boatbuilding career in 1940 at Graves Boatyard in Marblehead, Massachusetts. He became a leading advocate and teacher of building small wooden boats and wrote more than 850 articles on small boats that appeared in National Fisherman, WoodenBoat, Boating, and Yachting, among others. He died in 1995.

Build a wooden boat

Very good book. Well written and easy to understand. I definitely would recommend this to anyone who is interested in building a wooden boat.

Well written and informative yet a little disapointing

- Author storytelling abilities are great so this book is a pleasure to read.
- there is a lot of valuable boatbuilding material inside, thou as it is contained within boat's construction notes, it's hard to extract. This book will not be a reference manual.
- Boat's construction methods are not so classic. There is a lot of plywood and epoxy.
- Selection of designs was rather unsatisfying for me. There are wonderful rowboat designs (peapods, whitehalls) but it lacks in sailboat area. If you are not sailboat maniac you will find interesting designs on all levels of difficulty, after all.
- The level of details vary from design to design. Some are very complete step by step guides, others only rough sketches.
- As the book is about small craft there is little information about heavier backbone member construction. But to tell the truth I haven't found any book that would be satisfying in this field.
- For me, notes at the end (boatbuilder's planes) were one of the most interesting and part of the whole volume (along with boat's and builder's histories).
