Excellent value

This is a great collection of Renessanse pieces.

I am an intermediate guitar player (say, five years of playing) and the easy pieces are just immediately playable, intermediate are "browsable" (e.g. I can easily walk through them to get the idea) but would require a week or two to play smoothly, and "advanced" are hard, yet doable (I could probably take one as a 3-8 months project).

For a beginner it might be a good book as well, just make sure you're familiar with music notation already. This is a nice collection of pieces with fairly thoughtful fingering and advices about difficult parts. This is not a self-help guitar/music text book, and it doesn't have tabs (I am so happy about that, tabs would probably make it twice thicker).

Fingering is very good, and very thorough, sometimes with thorough right hand fingering. I disagree with fingering in some cases, but in any case, the proposed variant is at least "very good" if not "excellent".

RE CD. I am a little bit disappointment, CD alone would get maybe "3 star". It's OK to illustrate pieces, it's done by a professional guitarist, but it's definitely far away from a "world-class concert level performance". E.g. the last few lines in Mudarra's Fantasia where bass line is main melody and upper voice is accompaniment: bass line is not emphasized (it's quieter than the accompaniment) and it's not at all smooth.

Another of the Great Frederick Noad Titles

As far as guitar sheet music/song books go, Frederick Noad was and is a name to be trusted. This collection is no different from his others. A first rate compilation. I rarely have problems with his fingering suggestions. The selections are top notch and always include a few surprises! Mr. Noad was truly one of the finest classical guitar teachers of the 20th century (and a top flight guitarist to boot). His legacy lives on in his songbooks. I own everything he published and recommend him most highly to beginner, intermediate and advanced students alike.

Variety and value

I see that everyone else has covered the ground pretty well, so I'll just add two things:

Firstly, that I agree with the reviewer who thought that the pieces should be arranged for 3rd string to F# (as in N� 52), to simulate lute-tuning: using normal tuning just creates problems for yourself, in all but a few cases�. Still, the fingering is generally easy enough to change, so it's still a good book.

Fantastic to sum it up.

Is incredible better than fantastic? If yes, than this book is incredible, otherwise, if these words mean differente things, than I am pretty sure this book is both.
Could not let it go until I finished it and the "wow" feeling is still hanging around my head.
At first glance, it might seem that it's just a book about analysing data, but as you step further and further, things just go on, becoming even more interesting as you turn the pages.
Who's the best coach in history? The country most passionate about football? How to score in a penalty shoot out...?
All these questions are answered, or at least are presented in a way that it should give a wider view of things, and not only that, but through out the text are interesting facts intertwined with analyses and studies. And this done beautifully.
I HIGHLY recommend it to people that love "soccer". Give it a chance and you might feel marveled by it!

Remarkably moving, much more enjoyable than I expected

Soccernomics does two things very well. One is expose widely accepted beliefs in soccer culture. This is precisely what I expected from this book, and it's worth buying just to be informed on that front.

It also uses statistics to reveal the social unity that soccer fosters. I was very moved by the chapter that focuses on suicide and fandom (and club loyalty at large).

Please do not be scared away by the word "statistics". I hate math as much if not more than anyone. This book is extremely accessible to the average reader, but still deep enough to pique intellectual curiosity.

In short, Soccernomics is an absolute must-read if you are a soccer fan, period.

Amazing insights

Fantastic analysis of a sport which I have loved and followed for more than 30 years. Most findings are straight out surprises while a few are hunches I had nursed all along, like inward curving corner kicks lead to more goals, albeit scrappier ones.... This book will certainly make you sit up and question everything you ever thought you knew about football.

Sadly, most churches in the West today pretty much ignore the issue of Sanctification, and just focus on Justification - either out of ignorance about what Scripture teaches, or out of fear that living a holy life is essentially "legalism." But living a life of obedience to Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit has nothing to do with legalism - legalists think they "gain favor with God" by being good, but believers obey Christ out of gratitude because they already "have favor with God!" The "key" to sanctified living is gratitude! The Bible emphatically describes God as being both loving and holy, yet western Christianity primarily focuses on God's love, and says almost nothing at all about His holiness. As such, the central message of most churches is one of love and forgiveness, with scarcely a word being said about holiness and death to sin and self. Satan is thrilled with our one dimensional Christianity, because it essentially leaves believers lukewarm, impotent and ineffectual. This book presents God's blueprint for spiritual development and portrays the "transformational experiences" every believer goes through in life - they include ups and downs, highs and lows, peaks and valleys, joy and suffering, victory and defeat - these experiences are the "norm" for every believer; none of us get a painless, trouble-free road to glory. Incidentally, the material presented in this book reflects the teachings of the most respected Christian theologians since the reformation - individuals the evangelical community has long recognized as being "pillars of the faith." To our lamentable regret, however, these teachings no longer have a prominent place in the vast majority of churches in the West. It is time for believers in America today to reconsider the fullness of God's call upon their lives. Donald W. Ekstrand is a retired pastor, adjunct professor, and author. Dr. Ekstrand holds degrees in finance, business education, theology and divinity, and is a graduate of Arizona State University, Talbot School of Theology, and Western Seminary. a life transforming book

soul transformation is an outstanding examination of the believer sanctification process. This book takes you on a in-depth examination of what it means to be a believer and what God does to transform our soul into his likeness. We as believers are to be like Christ this means that we are to in our daily lives to pursue godliness and righteousness so that our actions and thoughts will be Christlike. Don W Ekstrand answers the very important question what is the process of the soul transformation? What does it mean we go to trials and tribulations? What is God trying to accomplish? And he answers many more questions regarding the purification process of the believer.
Don is an outstanding teacher. I know this because he was my pastor and teacher at Grace community Church in Tempe Arizona. So, if you are interested in God's purpose for suffering, temptation, and tribulation. Pick up the book soul transformation and open your heart and mind to the word of God and Don's soul searching examination of this transformation that all believers must go through.

Pumps, razors, brooms and other vices and virtues of thinking

If you have enjoyed any of Daniel Dennett's other books you will enjoy this. It is a pleasing, humorous and insightful journey into a gallery of mundane and profound thinking tools drawn from a wide-ranging set of disciplines, from literature and science to psychology and philosophy. It's worth noting that this is not really a "how to" book. Instead it's more like a survey of common as well as uncommon tools that human beings consciously and unconsciously use to both understand the world better and communicate and empathize with each other. Not surprisingly, given Dennett's profession, the bent is slightly more philosophical although the book is easy to read and appreciate.

The book starts with the simplest of tools, such as making mistakes. Dennett illuminates how making mistakes is not just ok but desirable since it's perhaps the only way to hone a system of thinking into a useful device. Other parts of the book cover concepts like reductio ad absurdum, Occam's Razor and the wittily-named Occam's Broom which is sometimes used nefariously to sweep arguments under the rug. There's a fair amount of ground Dennett covers before he gets to the concept stated in the book's name - intuition pumps. Intuition pumps refer to anything - from thought experiments to linguistic devices - that somehow make us bypass the process of rigorous thinking and reach a revelation primarily through intuition. One of the virtues of the book is how it describes examples of both good and bad intuition pumps including sleights of hand used by politicians and pseudoscientists. I was quite impressed by Dennett's attention to even very simple tools invoked through common expressions; for instance one of the fallacies he describes is the use of the word "rather" that's routinely used to set up a false dichotomy.

Given Dennett's other writings, it's not surprising to find him often refer to evolution as a rich mine for many of the tools. Variation, making mistakes, and generating lots of ideas to pick the best ones are all traits of the evolutionary process. Dennett also draws on work by diverse thinkers, from Wittgenstein to Stephen Jay Gould to Douglas Adams, to illustrate the power and pitfalls of language and thought. His trademark subtle (and not so subtle) wit and familiarity with a vast amount of pop culture and science is clearly apparent in the writing. The book will definitely reward those who like to think about thinking, and it's one I can definitely see myself periodically savoring like a plate of diverse appetizers.

A good primer on clear thinking

If you have read Dennett's previous books, particularly 'Freedom Evolves', and 'Darwin's Dangerous Idea', some portions of this book will sound very familiar, as it is largely based on previously published chapters, papers, and articles. That said, this is a very enjoyable read, an excellent guide to clear thinking based on more than 70 conceptual tools. It is to be praised that Dennett always strive for clarity and concision, even working in a field so prone to obscurity.

the long road

I've come a long way with Dennett. As a philosopher at U Penn in the '80s I had the chance to hear him speak at colloquia many times. He was indefatigable and an enjoyable, remarkably pleasant person. His collection, The Mind's I, made a tremendous impression upon me as did Consciousness Explained. His penchant for atheism is consistent with his materialism and comes as no surprise. His long-standing squabbles with Searle and Nagel ("What is it like to be a bat?") are some of the better battles in the recent history of philosophy. Personally I find Dennett a much more enjoyable read than the dense analytic philosophy I must spend time with. He really is a remarkably wide-ranging thinking, unusual for a philosopher and for that reason alone to be appreciated. As an aside I would like to offer the following ancedote. My mother and father were traveling by train in England sometime ago. They happened to be in a compartment with Dennett, who they said was a most gracious and helpful individual, helping them with their luggage, advice and so on. When they told him their son was a philosopher he offered his card and told them to have me call him. I still have the card, but I never made the call.

You Could Kill Someone With This Thing

This is a frighteningly large hardcover. Co-workers asked me if I was reading a textbook. No, instead it's 63 short stories culled from years of Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine. There's some big names in here, including Ed McBain, Lawrence Block, and Hillary Waugh.

Still, it's an uneven lot, with some true clunkers. Other stories are horribly dated by modern sensibilities with references to prices that stagger the imagination more than the dirty deeds (Sixty cents for a cheeseburger? Only at White Castle...) and a few references to 'Nam and the Cold War. There's even a tale with a science fiction bent about the first manned mission to Mars, but the author has planted tongue firmly in cheek, making it one of the more enjoyable, if quirky, stories in the collection.

There's enough memorable material to make this worth the read. I'd even recommend spacing the stories out, reading a few between other, longer works to prevent burnout. Recommended to any fans of mystery in any genre. You're sure to find something of merit here, especially if you find this on the cheap in a used bookstore since I'm fairly certain it's long out of print.

lots of great little short stories

most of the stories are about 5-10 pages. interesting easy to read stories chosen from the Alfred Hitchcock mystery magazine. The book was put together after Hitchcock's death and stories of course were not written by hitch.

I couldn't have went more from someone who wanted to understand how to think about position sizing of a strategy to someone who had gotten into this mindset while reading this book.

If you hear about a "probability mindset" being essential to good trading than to me the thinking in this book is an essential element to that mindset.

Excellent coverage of a difficult topic

... this book is incredible. I have a degree in mathematics and the principles expressed are extremely sound -- but far more important than the formulas are the first couple of chapters which cause you to view trading in a very different, and statistical, manner. Although the theories in this book can really only be applied to a trading system (which I haven't really used), after reading this book over several times I understand that there is a mathematical certainty that I will eventually lose my trading capital if I don't start approaching trading in a more systematic fashion. Anyway, I highly recommend it -- the sections on gambling theory alone are worth buying it.

Comprehensive Review of Adolescence

We used this text in my social work school in 1995. Since then I have given away my copy and I'm sorry I did. The book begins with Freud and covers the works of Peter Blos, Carol Gilligan and Erik Erikson.
If you don't have the time to look into the source texts then this is a good book for you. This book gives a broad overview of adolescence and in the cases of Freud and Erikson, an in-depth treatment on the various pre-adolescent stages. Most illuminating for me was the chapter on one of America's greatest contributions to this field, Harry Stack Sullivan. His chapter on Erikson is also quite good. But, if you have the time, read some of the source books. I recommend Erikson's CHILDHOOD AND SOCIETY, IDENTITY: YOUTH AND CRISIS; Gilligan's IN A DIFFERENT VOICE, and Sullivan's THE INTERPERSONAL THEORY OF PSYCHIATRY.

Excellent Analysis of Landmark Documents, and even obscure documents that have shaped the U.S Government

This book includes not only some of the most landmark documents that have formulated our government but also analysis that spans form a contemporary perspective to a historic one as well. I needed this book for a political course at Johns Hopkins University, and was impressed with how thoroughly the book discusses some of these documents, especially since some of these documents are obscure artifacts that many students/young adults probably don't know of. Regardless, this book is a great resource, but I gave it 4/5 stars because the documents aren't in chronological order- they're just haphazardly put together, the organization is just a little off for my taste.
