A great book for an unbeaten price

I came across this book while searching for a textbook for my introductory course to DB. This book is of an extreme value. It is a comprehensive reference for traditional relational data modeling and SQL and also contains updated advanced material on data mining, natural language processing, visualization and big data.

What I also like about the book is that it blends theory and practice of data modeling and SQL. Each chapter in the first part of the book starts with a data modeling concept (i.e. single entity, one-many, many-many etc...) and then shows how to implement it and perform queries with SQL.

The companion website includes all slides, datasets, and partial solutions of the exercises. All of that for $10 with Kindle, I can't ask for more. This is a must for database students and practitioners as well.

The worst textbook I've ever had to read

This is the worst textbook I've ever had to use. It's unnecessarily wordy, full of grammatical and formatting errors (in one part of the book, the same paragraph was printed twice in a row; in another, the book said that there were three reasons for something and then proceeded to list four - and there are similar errors splattered throughout the entire book), and extremely hard to navigate. I have better luck jumping around randomly in the book in search of a section than I do trying to actually use the search function to find it. The author jumps around from subject to subject in a way that makes it hard to understand; it's almost like he put a bunch of SQL concepts in a hat and randomly drew a couple for each chapter he wrote. Furthermore, there is some weird story about a lady named Alice mixed in with the chapters in what I perceive to be an attempt to make the book slightly more interesting. I assume that my professor is personal friends with the author, because that's the only reason I could think of for any professor to choose this book as a class textbook. The reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because the book has been useful in the context of my Database Management class, and it has been genuinely entertaining to read a textbook so poorly written. However, unless you are absolutely required to have this textbook for your class, I'd recommend against buying it. I'm sure there are much better-written SQL books out there that will teach you a lot more.

Perfect database book for generalists

I use this book, and have done so for years, in an MSc course for students from all sciences that want to acquire literacy on database design and SQL. The students like it and it allows them to work quite independently, having both a lesurely pace and enough depth. The author keeps it up to date, too.
It's not at its strongest as a reference; but since SQL versions differ and change, that might be too much to ask.

The Video is the Key

Buy this book for the video.

I've bought lots of drawing books over the years. I've given most away to people I don't like. I keep books by Lee Hammond and Carrie Stuart Parks because they do the best job of explaining how to draw, and to learn to draw you really need a good book.

The big difference between the two is that Hammond uses a grid to help you figure out proportion and Parks uses a measuring aid. Both methods work well and are complementary.

But even the best book is insufficient. You need to SEE HOW THEY ACTUALLY DRAW. And for that you need a video. It's like the difference between reading a book on golf and watching a golf video.

And this book has a 24 minute video.

So happy with this book

I started drawing portraits of my daughter from photos after losing her to cancer last year. Then I was given the name of this book and author and ordered it. It arrived the day before we were flying to Mexico and I read the whole book on the plane. I found a store in Mexico that sold the needed supplies and the first portrait I did was really good. Everyone liked it and thought I had potential. I have since recommended the book to others. With time I have improved in my drawing and I think this is a great book for those who want to draw very nice portraits. And I say if I can do it, anyone can. Go for it!

I have read a super-critical, long-winded review of this book that told me that I will never be a great artist using this book. I say so what! I draw beautiful portraits that are pleasing to my subjects and myself. Since I am 71 years old I don't intend to be the "professional" that the long-winded reviewer pretends to be. People are happy with my portraits and so am I. I am very grateful to Lee Hammond for this book.

A must have for all beginners who will ever draw faces

An excellent absolute beginner's book. [Just exactly what I was looking for.] Explains how to shade, shape, and properly proportion every facial feature and then how to put them all together in a well done 'portrait' -- using only a photograph. A must have for every beginner intending to draw faces. Be warned, however, that this book teaches to draw 'lifelike' in an ILLUSTRATIVE genre, as opposed to 'REALISTIC' [or 'REALISM']. An example of the difference would be a Norman Rockwell style drawing [illustrative] and any of the old masters [realistic]. This book teaches illustrative, Norman Rockwell style drawing.

So this book not the only beginner's book you should have if 'lifelike' and 'realistic' together is what you really want. You should also have 'Drawing on the right side of the Brain -- Betty Edwards and How to Draw What You See -- Rudy de Reyna.

Also, I bought this book used hardcover from 'melisasandy' in Amazon Marketplace and although it was advertised as good condition, it came in very excellent condition. If you are going to buy any books used, this is the third book I bought through 'melisasandy' and all arrived in excellent condition. I recommend you buy your used books from them when you can..

Patrick Stokes, Deakin University

Patrick Stokes is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Deakin University and a Research Fellow in Philosophy at the University of Hertfordshire. He has previously held research fellowships in the UK, US, and Denmark. He is the author of Kierkegaard's Mirrors (Palgrave, 2010), co-editor with John Lippitt of Narrative, Identity, and the Kierkegaardian Self (Edinburgh University Press, 2015), co-editor with Adam Buben of Kierkegaard and Death (Indiana University Press, 2011), a regular contributor to publications including The Conversation and New Philosopher, and a media commentator on philosophical matters.
