He has served as the National Intelligence Council s counselor and director of analysis and production for the last decade. He served as the intelligence advisor to Richard Holbrooke when he was the US Ambassador to the UN. After 9/11, he became deputy national security advisor to US Treasury Secretary Paul O Neill. I'm so excited that Is Authoritarianism Staging a Comeback? is finally here! This is a unique view of the rising tide of authoritarian dictators but, with that, more people-powered social movements that are proving the best and most untapped weapon against it. Burrows and Stephan offer an inspiring view of what's possible if, like dictators, we could all learn from the collective actions courageous individuals are catalyzing all over the world in democracies and backsliding autocracies alike.

About the Author
Ian Johnston was born in Valaparaiso, Chile, and educated in Canada and England. He has a BSc from McGill in Geology and Chemistry, a BA from Bristol in English and Greek, and an MA from Toronto in English. For many years he taught as a college and university-college instructor in British Columbia teaching English, Classics and Liberal Studies. He is the author of The Ironies of War: An Introduction to Homer's Iliad. His translation of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey have recently been published in both book and audiobook form. He is now retired and living in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

On the Nature of Things by Lucretius

This is superb modern translation of this work. If you attempt to read the version which appears in the Great Book of the Western World, you will truly appreciate this translation. Lucretius was an atomist, i.,e., he theorized that all things were made from tiny particles separated by great spaces, a fact which was not proven until the 20th century some 2,000 plus years later. If you like philosophy in particular, you will love reading Lucretius. BTW "The Swerve" is the history of the discovery of Lucretius manuscript.

In this era the tendency is to believe 2100 years ago poetry and philosophy of life were crude and filled with ignorance. Wrong. The insight Lucretius brings to humanity in this poetic form is powerful and insightful as one reflects upon time and place. Lucretius not only sees with his eyes but listens with his eyes to nature, humanity, and how those forces converge upon each other. As one not educated in poetry it took time to get the rhythm of the poetry and to learn and understand language and usage. That is part of the learning processing and look across this vast vista of time to see that maybe Lucretius invented the idea for Lego's and plus more.

I appreciated the translators footnotes in the ebook format.

Brilliant and Eternally Relevant

A brilliant work - in fact a revelation - that was centuries ahead of its time! By intuitive observation of nature Lucretius was able to deduce the existence of atoms that, in varying combinations, comprise all matter. In doing so he urged his fellow man to relish the empirical nature of things rather than fearing non-existent Gods who, in the vacuum of real knowledge, dominated human emotions. As relevant today as it was in its time, with a poetic touch that keeps the reader as enchanted as well as illuminated.

One beautiful day in the spring of 1917 a young man and woman went for a stroll through a wood outside the village of Roos in Yorkshire. They wandered into a glade filled with long stemmed flowers bearing white blossoms. The woman danced and sang among the flowers while the man, who was still thin and weak after a severe case of trench fever, stood watching. Shortly after that golden day the man incorporated its memory into a story he was writing that he intended to be part of a "mythology for England," a series of interconnected tales he had been working on since his days at Oxford years earlier. The man was John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and the woman was his wife Edith Bratt Tolkien,whom he had loved for many years before their marriage in the spring of 1916. The story Tolkien wrote and rewrote over many years had several different versions, but the story of a beautiful woman dancing in a forest clearing was always part of it. Eventually it became The Tale of Beren and Luthien.

Beren was a mortal Man who after many adventures and hardships wandered through a mysterious wood in Beleriand, a large realm in the West of Middle-earth defended by Elves and Men against the tyranny of the Dark Lord Morgoth and his minions. Beren came across a beautiful woman dancing in a glade filled with white flowers. She was Luthien, daughter of King Thingol of the Elves. They fell in love, but King Thingol refused to allow them to marry unless they brought him a Silmaril, one of three magical gems crafted in Valinor across the Sea but stolen by Morgoth centuries earlier. Their Quest, its fulfillment, and Beren and Luthien's ultimate fate make up the Tale, which became a center piece of Tolkien's mythology. He referred to Beren and Luthien several times in The Lord of the Rings (whose characters Aragorn and Arwen are descendants of and counterparts to Beren and Luthien), and eventually a version of the Tale was included in The Silmarillion, which was completed by Tolkien's son Christopher and published in 1977. Later Christopher Tolkien was to edit and publish the twelve volume History of Middle-earth, which includes several more versions of the Tale in both prose and poetic forms.

In this beautiful book we have the Tale itself in several of its versions beginning with the Tale of Tinuviel, which was written in the early years of Tolkien's development of his mythology and which contains some elements which were later discarded or drastically altered. For example,a major villain in The Tale of Tinuviel is Tevildo Prince of Cats, who was later to become Sauron, the chief servant of Morgoth. There are extracts from an early poetic version, The Lay of Leithian as well as from other versions written by Tolkien at various times during his life. Most if not all of this material has already been published in The Silmarillion and The History of Middle-earth, but having it all available in one volume is very valuable. In addition, Christopher Tolkien has provided an extensive Preface, some Notes on The Elder Days, and more introductory material on the Tale itself. These will be invaluable to experienced Tolkien scholars as well as those who might not be as familiar with the wider range of Middle-earth material. An additional pleasure are the nine illustrations in full color plates provided by Alan Lee, one of the most well-known and talented artists at work depicting Tolkien's worlds today. His paintings have an ethereal quality that absolutely befit their subject.

Since there is very little previously unpublished material in Beren and Luthien some might wonder whether a separate volume is worthwhile. I can assure them that the careful production and attention to detail in extracting one narrative from a very rich fabric makes this book highly desirable. Additionally, Christopher Tolkien notes in his Preface that as he is now in his ninety-third year this is "presumptively" his last edition of his father's writings after over forty years of labor. He also writes that "the tale is chosen in memoriam" because it played such a strong part in his father's life and marriage, therefore it can be considered one of Tolkien's most personal stories. Tolkien himself made reference to his attachment to this Tale shortly after Edith's death in 1971. He wrote to his son Christopher about that spring day in Roos, saying that she was the "chief source" of what was to become a major part of his legendarium. Today J.R.R. Tolkien and Edith Bratt Tolkien are buried beneath a single headstone carved with their names and dates and "Beren" and "Luthien."

I purchased the special edition, which was only available via third party, and currently has no presence anywhere on Amazon. The quality of the book is excellent. It is in the same format as, and perfectly compatible on my bookshelf next to, the special edition of The Children of Hurin. THIS review will focus only on the contents.

This is not the book I was expecting. The quote that appears in my headline is straight out of the preface. And indeed the rest of the preface goes on to attempt to answer that question. In short, the goal was to get all of the existing revisions of Beren and Luthien into one place. This is very different from the purpose of The Children of Hurin. And the resulting product is a very different kind of reading.

If you have studied the History of Middle Earth series (and if you are considering the purchase of THIS book, you are almost certainly aware of them to some extent) then you already know that major literary work of Christopher Tolkien's life has been to find a way to get all of the fragments of his father's writing, at all stages of his life, sorted out into chronological order and published with extensive commentary to show how his father's conception of the world, the languages, and the tales themselves changed over time.

Regrettably, very few of those tales were ever completed, and fewer still were completed at a stage that was compatible with his final conception of Middle Earth as seen in the Lord of the Rings.

Many of us, myself included, were fascinated by the Histories. They served a great purpose. And they curiously straddled an unusual divide: the meticulous level of documentation could be of interest only to scholars and historians, but they also contained the last bits of story that fans desperately wanted to read, even in their incomplete forms.

But sometimes.... you just want to read a cohesive story. Isn't that ultimately what we started this journey for? The story moved us. It's a tribute to the power of Tolkien's stories that we also wanted to "see how the sausage was made." Sadly, the last bits of even semi-completed narrative, that were also compatible with the published version of The Lord of the Rings, were published in 1980 in Unfinished Tales.

The publication of The Children of Hurin in 2007 was a gift from above. Finally, we had one of the tales of the Elder Days definitively re-edited into a single, cohesive narrative, simply readable as a story - without constantly being interrupted to explain which folio the next three sentences were taken from, and why they are preferred over the pencil-erased version in the margins of an earlier notepad. I'm sure many of us believed that Beren and Luthien was to follow that model. It does not. This, to put it lightly, dashed my hopes. The book I hoped this would be, does not exist, and will never exist. Apparently the remaining fragments of text needed to complete a long-form prose version of this story were either never written, or Christopher Tolkien does not think them worthy of publication. Frankly, I don't think the marketing material was suitably clear on this. And that is my essential criticism.

The contents of the book are themselves wonderful. However, every word of it was taken from the first five volumes of The Histories. If you have those books, then you have no need (other than aesthetic) for this book. If you have not been introduced to those books, then you might be taken aback by the nature of this one.

This book really only serves three purposes:

1) It DOES succeed in making it much easier to follow the development of this one particular tale, outside of its possibly-overwhelming context. Yes. Having all of the material from the histories in one place makes researching the transition of Tevildo, Prince of Cats into Sauron, the Dark Lord in training much easier. (For example). It does not however give any new insight, since you've already read it in The Book of Lost Tales II.

2) It DOES look beautiful on a bookshelf full of other special editions of Tolkien's work. This point is not trivial to me, nor to some of you. We are readers. We consider a well-bound book to be a work of art.

3) As with The Children of Hurin, it contains a number of beautiful paintings by Alan Lee. These are worth seeing, and certainly won't be available in the mass market version.

tl;dr: I'm happy to have this book. I'm sad that it doesn't contain new material or a final cohesive narrative.

It's a literary lesson—not a novel

For those wondering just what this book may be, here is the skinny:

1. This is NOT a single-narrative novel. It is not even a pieced-together story like The Children of Hurin.

2. THIS IS a collection of incomplete manuscripts and manuscript extracts that JRRT wrote over the course of many years as he struggled (unsuccessfully) to set out in full the tale of Beren and Luthien. Son and editor Christopher Tolkien has selected the material presented here to show how his father's conception of the story evolved over time. This is the point of the book.

3. All of the manuscript material included here has been published before in various volumes of The History of Middle Earth. Nothing new is included.

This IS the story that was closest to Tolkien's heart, and it is the great tragedy of his career that he never finished a full-length version. He made several substantial efforts in poetry and prose and simple summaries only to abandon each one. With each effort he changed the storyline and the details. Most notably Beren went from being an elf to being a man. Out of all this, Christopher Tolkien pieced together one of the longest chapters in The Silmarillion. In this book, he provided a dedicated illustration of the complexities with which he had to contend.

No one will ever KNOW the story of Beren and Luthien because JRRT never worked it out himself. Readers of this book, however, will take away some understanding of the Professor worked on his legend off and on through the years.

This book is a brief survey of Western historical thinking from ancient times to the present and also an introduction to some of the main issues and problems in historiography, philosophy of history, and historical method. It seeks to strike a balanced coverage and to make such concerns accessible to beginning students. Novice historians need to encounter questions of theory in order to grasp the nature of the discipline, but many probably lack the prerequisites to take on R. G. Collingwood straight. This small work may ease the transition.

Great overview

This short book does a good job of providing an overview of Western historical thinking from Herodotus and Thucydides to the modern period. The first chapter is a brief discussion of why we study history to begin with: curiosity, a need to bring order to the world, identify cause and effect, study the identity of a people, calculate the consequences of our actions, and to provide society's memory.

Chapters two and three review the evolution of historical writings and their approach. Gilderhus begins with the ancient historians with a discussion of history in Greece and Rome and then reviews the influence of Christian thought; a paradigm against which history revealed the workings of God's plan. This perspective began to disappear as Western Christianity divided and historians of various religious persuasions wrote histories supporting their perspectives of the past. Enlightenment historians went on to reject a religious approach or even a factual approach wishing to rely on reason for their proofs while at the same time denigrating the past. This gave way to the influence of romanticism and nationalism in the 19th century which led to a more scientific approach to research and analysis. (p. 36) (In some ways this was a reaction to the emphasis on religion and God on man but it could also be a reaction to the renaissance emphasis on the greatness of classical civilizations.)

Chapter 4 then reviews the philosophical aspects (speculative approaches) of history; Gilderhus says there are three schema: cyclical, providential, and progressive (p. 49) and discusses each in turn. Chapter 5 reviews the analytical philosophical approaches to history reflected in the positivist approach (general laws exist that govern the outcomes of human affairs, and idealist thought (which believed that because history was about man, who had free will, history was not repeatable). Chapter six is a simple overview of types of historical papers and research. The last chapter summarizes the state of historiography as it has evolved in the last century.

Entire books have been written about each of the areas addressed in Gilderhus' book; the strength of this book is that it provides a simple easy-to-read overview of the whole field and the thinking behind history.

Good Introduction in Historiography

I have to preface this with the caveat that my graduate-level historiography class was taught by Dr. Gilderhus, though that was several years ago. Then again, he didn't see the need to use this text at that level of study. Where I first read it was in my undergraduate historiography class. The text isn't earth-shattering nor meant as such. As an undergraduate though, I found the text highly informative on the basics of the history of history, its theory and various methodologies. Dr. Gilderhus has come up with perhaps the most elegant, but not simplistic, definition of what history is that I have yet to read. For Dr. Gilderhus, history is "the true story of the human past." It's a definition that works well for the non-history types but still offers something for more advanced readers to unpack. And that's the beauty of this text. It's not meant as a complex treatise on historiography but as an initial pass at the major figures, modes of thought and methodological developments that have brought Western historical thought to where it stands today. For a beginning student or avid amateur you'll find the text an accessible entry-point into historiography. While there are many other texts, such as E.H. Carr's "What Is History?" that provide a deeply nuanced examination of the field, having the basics already laid out allows one to focus on those nuances without needing to look up a name every other page.
I would recommend this text to anyone, even advanced-level history students, who want to quickly grasp the basics of historiography. As any good primer text does, "History & Historians" invites the reader to delve deeper into the topic but still stands on its own strengths. I gave the text only a three-star rating because, as I said, it isn't a masterful and innovative text. Instead, the text is a solid, cursory overview of the field. Complaints about its lack of depth miss the point. If you want complex theory then move on to Hayden White or Lynn Hunt. But as an introductory text it does the job and does it well.

Concise and Informative

An excellent book introducing the origins of historical thought, the changing ideas and methods of history, and the challenges of history in the postmodern era. Also, the introduction provides a great discussion on the importance of studying history. A very understandable and readable book, only 135 pages. I recommend it highly for anyone interested in studying historical philosophy.

There was a cartoon famous some 35 years ago that depicted an editor returning a manuscript to a crestfallen author: "But you have a wonderful style; Hemingway's, isn't it?" In this critical bigraphy, Meyers, a professor at the University of Colorado and author of some 20 books, charts the life of the man who created that "wonderful," innovative style imitated by so many over the decades. It was virtually a new language, seemingly simplistic but carefully forged and intensely suggestive. Hemingway himself was flamboyant and hugely personable, and, in his prime, had the good looks of a movie star. The understated tone of his writing was identified with his image and an attitude toward life and loss that he seemed to exemplify. It is amazing that this Midwesterner, with only a high-school education, should, in his mid-20s, have been crony of the likes of Joyce, Pound and Gertrude Stein, as well as other literary notables who colored expatriate Paris after the Great War. Hemingway became not only the best known of the lot, but quite simply one of the most famous people in the world. He assiduously courted that fame and it was among the things that eventually undid him. Among the telling details in the life of this man, who created himself as the personification of maleness, is that his mother dressed him as twin to his sister until he was three. By five he was a "soldser" who, when asked what he was afraid of, would shout, " 'fraid of nothin." Norman Mailer, whom Meyers terms "the hip pocket Hemingway of our time," wrote sympathetically that Hemingway's life had been heroic, that he had struggled with cowardice always and that "his inner landscape was a nightmare. . . . It is possible that he carried a weight of anxiety with him that would have suffocated any man smaller than himself." Meyers's biography in no way replaces Carlos Baker's massive 1969 achievement, Ernest Hemingway: A Life Story, but it is marvelously rich in new, revealing anecdote and it deservedly stands beside Baker's as a saltier and less discreet companion volume. Hemingway always insisted that he had the obligation to withhold his work from public view till it satisfied his stan dards. In a slender volume that traces Hemingway from boyhood through World War I and his first marriage, Griffin ignores those standards, print ing for the first time five inept, occa sionally silly pieces of post-adolescent fiction, only one of which (``Cross roads: an anthology'') even hints at Hemingway's mature genius. Griffin's other contribution is biographical. He establishes that Hemingway indeed had affairs with his wartime nurse, Agnes; and, while engaged to his first wife, with their mutual friend, Katy Smith. Otherwise, Griffin adds little of critical, interpretative, or biographical merit and does so without stylistic grace. Meyers's style is also pedestrian, but more serviceable. What he lacks in grace he makes up for with scrupulous honesty. Where Carlos Baker withheld information or veiled its implications, Meyers details fully. The portrait is not flattering but it is always believable and often pitiable. ``A man is essentially what he hides,'' Meyers writes, arguing that beneath the mask resided a ``re flective man of innate sensitivity.'' Many will agree; at its best, Heming way's prose supports that view. To prove his thesis, Meyers proceeds chronologically, interpolating special analyses ranging from literary battles to influences; from ethnic and sexual prej udices to religious beliefs; from paren tal relationships to the complex in volvement with wives and mistresses. Occasionally, Meyers enthralls, as when he records the FBI's ``pursuit'' of Hemingway. Too often, however, we learn too little that is new or insightful. Carlos Baker is generally known as the founding father of Hemingway biographical studies. His 1969 biography, "Ernest Hemingway: A Life Story" is the so-called "authorized" Hemingway bio and it was the first book of its kind to explore the author's life. All subsequent biographers owe a great deal to Baker and the seven years he spent producing "Ernest Hemingway: A Life Story."
Calling Baker's bio the definitive bio of Ernest Hemingway is difficult though for several reasons. First of all, being published in 1969, the book is now outdated to a great degree. Second of all, a slew of other biographies have been published since 1969 and some are very formidable. Baker's book, in my humble opinion, is probably the most tediously researched biography of Hemingway. His "Notes" section is just over 100 pages.
If I had to recommend one standard Hemingway biography, I would likely choose "Hemingway: A Biography" by Jeffrey Meyers. I have read many Hemingway biographies and in comparing them, the work of Meyers does stand out. He offers details not present in other bios and provides fine commentary on EH's literature. Meyers gets as close to definitive as I think one can come in a single book.

The most interesting man in the world

The Mexican beer, Dos Equis, has reportedly experienced over 20% growth since launching their hilarious marketing campaign featuring a mature, bearded man who "is often questioned by police just because they find him interesting" and who's "blood smells like cologne."

The inspiration for this contemporary advertising marvel is clearly Ernest Hemingway (who incidentally later in his life endorsed Ballatine Beer in the US). And Jeffrey Meyers' marvelous biography of the writer generally confirms that heroic, manly caricature; a hulking, hirsute stud who perspired pure testosterone while running with the bulls, boxing with local toughs, reeling in half-ton marlins in the Gulf stream, hunting lions and elephants in Africa, fighting the fascists in Spain and France/Germany, and bedding an endless string of beautiful women, who were dangerously mature when he was a young man and dangerously young when he was in his twilight years. (Here is a Hemingway quote, which may be my very favorite: "I [fornicated with] every woman I wanted to [fornicate with] and many I didn't, and would like think I [fornicated them] well.") He is, for sure, a model of envy and emulation for any red blooded but morally ambiguous young man.

There was so much about this book that I loved. Here are three simple endorsements.

First, Meyers' presents a complete and unadorned portrait of the master. In no way is Hemingway idolatrized, nor is he necessarily vilified. He was larger-than-life, largely because that is the life image he created for himself. He could be fun and self-effacing, the boisterous but interesting man toward whom the floor seemed to tilt during a cocktail party. But more often than not, especially with family, he could be a boorish, drunken liar, far from the congenial womanizer portrayed in the idealized Dos Equis commercials.

Second, Meyers does an admirable job of explaining how Hemingway's personal life influenced his fiction. Every character model from his novels and short stories is completely and convincingly explained. Indeed, I would say that this biography is required reading for a deeper, richer appreciation of all of Hemingway's writing.

Finally, Meyer writes with a certain clarity and simplicity that evokes the subject's influence on American literature. This biography is a real joy to read and easy to digest, just like so many of Hemingway's greatest works. It is recommended without hesitation to anyone.

"You'd better give me that other drink."

Jeffrey Meyers' eponymous biography of Ernest Hemingway is, as some have made it, a saltier companion to Carlos Baker's masterful 1969 definitive authorized biography. Meyers is not overly adoring of his subject and gives us a different view of Hemingway. Still, although Meyers is grittier than Baker and manages to dig deeper into Hemingway's complex and contradictory personality, he is not gritty enough nor does he dig deep enough to displace Baker as the biographer nonpareil.

And neither does he capture the reader's imagination. HEMINGWAY: A BIOGRAPHY presents Ernest Hemingway in surprisingly muted tones, especially considering the almost cartoonish excesses to which Hemingway could drive himself. This is a very competent and workmanlike biography. However, its pacing and voice are didactic and dry and its portrait of the artist lacks color. Like twenty other books about the man, HEMINGWAY: A BIOGRAPHY belongs on the shelf as part of a well-rounded collection, but can replace none of them.
